Each year at Tern Systems we create summer jobs for students from Icelandic universities. Summer Projects are an opportunity for the students gain experience working with our developers and they get to make real improvements in our Air Traffic Systems.

This year we welcome back Davíð Sindri Pétursson, who has completed his second year in Software Engineering at the University of Iceland. Last year, Davið worked on a Radio Communications Simulator and this year he continues to support our Orion Simulator team by developing an Environment Editor application.

User configuration is an important component to keep our systems useful in constantly evolving airspaces. As sectors, equipment and procedures are updated, system administrators can maintain the accuracy and value of our simulator by updating the system configuration. Traditionally, simple configuration files are used but there are drawbacks to this solution such as a lack of validation, difficulties in navigating large configuration files and limiting users to alphanumeric data entry. In this proof-of-concept Editor, we will demonstrate features such as validation of allowed ranges, search functionality, and a basic UI framework so that developers can easily add configurations to the application.

Tern Systems have recruited students from local universities to work on exciting new projects in our Simulators team

Árni from Reykjavík University and Davíð from the University of Iceland are building the Communications Simulator. Eygló and Sindri are Digital Multimedia graduates of Reykjavík Technical College, they are creating 3D assets for the new Driving Simulator for Keflavík International Airport

Summer projects allow Tern Systems to start work on experimental features that might not otherwise get development attention. The projects are an opportunity for us to get to know new talents from local educational institutions and provide practical experience for the students/graduates. The Communications Simulator project undertaken by our youngest software developers is an ambitious VoIP system which will simulate communications between Air Traffic Control students and Pseudo Pilots (staff who facilitate exercises). This project will add a vital capability to Tern's existing suite of simulator products. Our pair of Digital Multimedia graduates from the Reykjavík Technical College are working with our Lead Graphics Engineer to develop a new Driving Simulator. Their skills in creating 3D art assets will allow us to build a simulator to safely and cost-effectively train airport staff how to drive around around Aprons and Taxiways at Keflavík International Airport. Our latest colleagues have made a great impression so far and we expect their work to feature prominently in Tern's product suite in the near future
